Isaias Victims in Alabama and Florida Get Until February to File

The IRS pushed deadlines to February 4 in 40 Alabama counties and February 8 in 27 Florida counties, including October's extension deadline. Balances due in April did not move.

Individuals and businesses in the parts of Alabama and Florida hit by Hurricane Isaias have more time for many federal tax deadlines, the IRS announced October 14. In Alabama, deadlines falling on or after October 7, 2026, are postponed to February 4, 2027, in 40 counties. In Florida, deadlines falling on or after October 9 are postponed to February 8, 2027, in 27 counties.

That includes the October 15 deadline for people who had a valid extension to file their 2025 return. It does not include the tax itself: payments on 2025 returns were due April 15, 2026, and are not eligible, so interest on unpaid 2025 balances keeps running. Estimated tax payments originally due after the start dates are postponed, as are quarterly payroll and certain excise returns, including those normally due November 2.

Extension Filers Have Until Midnight Tonight to File 2025 Returns

October 15 is the last day to file without a late-filing penalty if you requested an extension. IRS Free File stays open through today.

Taxpayers who requested an extension in April have until today, October 15, to file their 2025 federal income tax returns. For most people with a valid extension, it is the last day to file without a late-filing penalty.

An extension to file was never an extension to pay. Tax owed was due April 15, so anyone filing now who still owes is already being charged interest on the balance. Filing today at least stops a late-filing penalty from being added.

Can't Pay Your Tax Bill? How IRS Payment Plans Work

A short-term plan costs nothing to set up. A monthly plan applied for online with automatic debit costs $29; by phone or mail without it, $178.

If you owe the IRS and cannot pay in full, the agency offers two kinds of payment plans, and the cheapest way in is usually online.

A short-term payment plan gives you up to 180 days to pay. There is no setup fee whether you apply online, by phone, by mail or in person, though penalties and interest keep running until the balance is paid. Individuals can apply online if they owe less than $100,000 in combined tax, penalties and interest.

After September's Hike, the Fed Decides Again October 28

The federal funds target is 3.75 to 4 percent. Inflation ran at 3.7 percent in September, well above the Fed's 2 percent goal.

The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by a quarter point at its September 15–16 meeting, to a target range of 3.75 to 4 percent, on a 12–0 vote. Its next decision comes at the end of the October 27–28 meeting, followed by a final 2026 meeting December 8–9.

The statement said inflation remains elevated and that the increase would support a timelier return to the 2 percent goal, while describing the economy as expanding at a solid pace with unemployment little changed. September's Consumer Price Index, released October 14, showed prices up 3.7 percent from a year earlier.
