How it works
Federal income tax is figured on your pay minus pre-tax contributions and the standard deduction, through the IRS's 2026 brackets. Each bracket's rate applies only to the income inside it, which is why your effective rate is lower than your top bracket.
Social Security is 6.2 percent of wages up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500. Medicare is 1.45 percent of all wages, plus 0.9 percent above $200,000 ($250,000 for joint filers). Pre-tax 401(k) contributions do not reduce these.
The child tax credit is up to $2,200 per child under 17, reduced by $50 for each $1,000 of income above $200,000 ($400,000 joint). Only the part that offsets tax is shown here.
Not included: state and local income taxes, other credits, the new deductions for tips, overtime and car-loan interest, the senior deduction, other income, and itemizing. Your actual withholding depends on your W-4; the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator checks it.
